Shy Octopus Looking at You

Peter Godfrey-Smith:

A small octopus was staring at one of our unmanned cameras on a tripod for a while from its den, and then went off camera and returned with a piece of dead sponge. This it arranged on the top of the den, as something between a roof and a helmet, and huddled beneath it, looking out. It was the right size, rigid, and light. I am not sure that the little octopus was bothered by the camera, and wanted a barrier against it presence, but it did look that way.
